Caring about colour in architecture

02 June 2021

Colour plays such an important role in the way that we respond to space. Different tones and hues are linked to certain emotions and memories, which can either heighten our awareness or calm us down. This is a basic concept but architects have had an uneven relationship with the different methods of using colour in buildings, both inside and out. The reticence to experiment is changing as a new generation of designers are embracing bold patterns and wild decorative techniques that pick up on a wide range of styles and cultural heritage. Social media has demonstrated that people are drawn to bright and quirky spaces that can enliven shared experiences.

The Museum of Architecture and Axalta will bring together some of the recent proponents of using colour in the built environment to share techniques and celebrate the joy of creating kaleidoscopic and vibrant environments.
