Industrialisation has left us big cities with factories, canals and railroads. Post-war global capitalism has added high rises, airports, motorways, and fibre cables.
Infrastructure is a part of the city that must care: built to last forever and built for an inherently unpredictable future. We can expect no reward in return. Now as we all reassess what matters, Collective Culture Studio asks how do we rebuild care and empathy in our city?
We look specifically at the Westway flyover: a 1960s piece of transport infrastructure that connected automobile transport through the city, but also divided the local community of Kensington.
We offer insights, answers and questions in an exhibition of architectural design proposals and research in an outdoor space under the Westway, hosted by the Westway Trust and TfL. It is accompanied by a guided walking tour, from Westbourne Park tube station to the Westway roundabout near White City.
