Church, Community and Care

21 June 2021

16:00 -17:00

Church buildings have traditionally wrestled with the twin vocation of being both ‘House of God’ (Domus Dei) and ‘Community Space’ (Domus Ecclesiae). Modern expectations of care and outreach have heightened this tension, driving new and exciting architectural interventions in historic buildings. This workshop uses St Paul’s Knightsbridge in London as a case study of how churches can be places of transcendence and aesthetic satisfaction, and more utilitarian space for gathering to advance community care. How can worship, prayer, sanctuary and care be combined in the heart of post-COVID communities, and what rethinking or traditional church architecture might this entail?

Presenters:
• Alan Gyle, Priest & Organisational Consultant
• Phil Davies, Head of Future Programmes at SPK
• Paul Vick, FRSA, Paul Vick architects, has designed changes at St Paul’s Knightsbridge and at St Mary’s Nursing Home. Voted most Innovative Architecture Firm, London 2020, 2019 and 2018 (AI).
