Maggie’s West London Centre – baked by Grace Simmonds, Helen Lynn & Emily Pentony

The Architecture Bake Off 2021: Against the Architects

The Bakers: Grace Simmonds, Helen Lynn & Emily Pentony
The Bake: Maggie's West London Centre

"Using Rogers original heart concept, we baked a three-tier orange Madeira cake, with buttercream and a red heart sponge running through the centre - the symbolic heart of the building. We baked spiced orange gingerbread, piped with royal icing, coated in 100s and 1000s to create textured, protective walls that wrap the building. The overhanging roof was made with grey-dyed spiced gingerbread and fondant, with the intricate windows carefully piped on the top and underside."

"The striking building, nestled in the serene garden was fun to recreate. For the landscaping, we made marshmallow rice crispy trees with dark chocolate dipped trunks, the large tree made with green-dyed white chocolate popcorn. Boulders, tables and benches were dyed ‘wood’ colour and moulded to form. Low shrubbery was piped in around the trees and finished with white fondant flowers bordering the ginger crumb pathway. Made with care, by Grace her Auntie Helen and cousin Emily - the cake was enjoyed by the residents of a nearby care home."
